Ophthalmology - Health Services - Eskenazi Health

The eyes are one of the body’s most complicated and problematic structures. According to the Vision Council of America, about 75 percent of adults currently use some sort of vision correction such as glasses or contact lenses, making eye care one of the more common forms of treatment a person will receive during his or her lifetime.

Located on the sixth floor of the Sandra Eskenazi Outpatient Care Center, Eskenazi Health Eye Care offers comprehensive eye care services to help patients improve and protect their vision. Many vision-threatening diseases, if detected early, can be cured or treated to prevent or slow the progression of vision loss. Eskenazi Health ophthalmologists are trained to deal with the entire spectrum of eye conditions, ranging from serious diseases such as glaucoma or retinal detachment to less serious conditions like dry eye or the need for glasses.

Routine eye examinations are one of the most important preventive steps a person can take. During an eye exam, an eye care provider reviews an individual’s medical history and completes a series of tests to determine the health of the eyes. Information derived from the exam may lead to medical procedures or prescriptions.

As individuals age, it’s particularly important to have the eyes tested regularly. Patients with certain pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes, are at a higher risk for several eye disorders, including glaucoma and cataracts, and should have eye exams at least once every year.
