In an effort to raise awareness and eliminate or minimize injury, the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Health provides burn prevention education to the community and certain at-risk groups.
The burn team visits schools and community health fairs to educate children and parents about the importance of smoke detectors and escape plans in case of fire. Teaming up with area fire departments, children also learn about stop, drop and roll and can visit a “smoke house” to see what it’s like to experience a house fire.
The burn team also visits nursing homes, senior centers and retirement facilities to bring burn prevention education to the senior population, who is at increased risk for burns.
