On Tuesday, May 5, the Eskenazi Health Farmers' Market will kick off its eighth season providing fresh and local produce, fresh baked goods, plants and other market items to the public. This year’s market incorporates new elements as well, including yoga, music, cooking demonstrations, free food samples and more.
Every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., The Commonground in front of the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, located at 720 Eskenazi Ave., will be transformed into a farmers’ market with several vendors, local farmers, meditation classes and fitness demonstrations. The market goes throughout the summer months and ends Tuesday, Sept. 15. The event will occur rain or shine.
Every other week, Rob Lyons, spiritual care manager at Eskenazi Health, will be leading healthful mind exercises at The Commonground from 12:35 to 1:05 p.m. that are open to the public. The mind exercises are designed to give basic guidance on the concepts, as well as practical experience, with different forms of these exercises offered each week. The mindful exercises presented are not religious in nature, though individuals using them can apply and adapt the techniques presented to their own spiritual tradition if they so desire.
The farmers' market will also include music, such as live concerts and a DJ, along with several different exercise classes. Guests, patients and employees alike can enjoy free yoga, boot camp and fitness dance classes every Tuesday afternoon.
"We want to bring people out in the community and really create some amazing energy at Eskenazi Health," said Brian Schroeder, director of Eskenazi Health Wellness.
Duos will again be part of the weekly offerings this year with their permanent location directly next to the market. Signs will be displayed to direct market goers to the location. All items sold at the Eskenazi Health Farmers’ Market are grown or made within 150 miles of the Eskenazi Health campus and within the state of Indiana.
Eskenazi Health Food & Nutrition Services and Eskenazi Health Wellness are once again pairing with Bud’s BBQ for a fresh barbeque cook out during the famers' market. Each week, Bud’s BBQ will offer a different main meat dish, including brats, ribs, chicken and more, and pair it with delicious side dishes.
Eskenazi Health Sky Farmer Rachel White will provide educational information on the food grown at the Eskenazi Health Sky Farm. Samples from the sky farm will also be available to patrons. Registered dieticians at Eskenazi Health will be on hand to discuss healthy alternatives and easy, affordable recipes.
The Eskenazi Health Farmers' Market is part of the innovative Eskenazi Health Wellness program. Eskenazi Health Wellness began in 2005 as a way to encourage employees and others to place wellness and health as a top priority.
While the market's aim is to attract Eskenazi Health employees and others on the IUPUI campus, all visitors and guests are encouraged to stop by and visit the farmers’ market. The Eskenazi Health Parking Garage is accessible for patrons and is located just west of the market on Dr. Harvey Middleton Way.
