Gender Health - Health Services - Eskenazi Health

The Eskenazi Health Gender Health Program provides gender-affirming care including hormone therapy and specialty services for adult transgender patients of all gender identities. The first of its kind in Indiana, the program combines hormone management and other comprehensive services with surgical options.

Established in March 2016, the program includes many skilled team members trained in the WPATH standards of care. From medical providers and surgeons, to nurses and caring support staff, all are dedicated to serving the transgender community with excellence. Additional letters from outside providers are not required to schedule a new patient appointment. The Gender Health Program utilizes the informed consent model of care.

Research by the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association shows that LGBTQ+ patients often experience barriers to affirming, competent health care due to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. The Gender Health Program is designed to fill a void by providing high-quality, affirming care and support for gender-diverse populations in Indiana and surrounding areas.

All new patients (including those already on hormone therapy) will first schedule an intake appointment to establish care prior to scheduling an appointment with a Gender Health Program provider. Please be advised there is a waitlist for these appointments. A member of the Gender Health Program will answer questions and explain next steps during this initial appointment.

Request an appointment on this webpage or call the Gender Health Program at 317.880.6042. If you do not have health insurance, please contact Eskenazi Health Financial Counseling prior to your appointment. Patient referrals can be faxed to 317.880.0445.

Two appointments are needed in order to establish care as a new patient with the Gender Health Program. The first is the intake appointment, which lasts about 90 minutes. You will meet with program staff who will get to know you and your personal gender story. Please bring any documents you have from previous mental health providers to this visit. New patients do not need a letter from a mental health provider to start care with the Gender Health Program.

The second appointment is with a medical provider, who will ask about your medical history, order lab work (with your permission), and discuss hormones if this is a desired treatment. This appointment is scheduled for 40 minutes, but please plan for longer, as there are many different providers who work with the Gender Health Program and are available to meet with you during your appointment if you choose.
