One of the human body’s most powerful internal structures, the nervous system is in charge of coordinating bodily movements and activities. The nervous system is composed of two subsystems that work together to transport and deliver “messages” from the brain to different areas of the body: the central nervous system in the brain and spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system in the receiving extremities such as the eyes, skin and limbs.
The actual neural process of sending these messages all over the body is extremely complex, leading to several possible health issues if problems with the nervous system arise. Neurology is the study of these neural conditions as well as the overall structure and health of the nervous system. Neurology physicians, or neurologists, understand, manage, diagnose and treat neurological conditions, including coordination and sensation issues, muscular weakness, confusion or dizziness. Patients experiencing sensory problems with touch, smell or vision may also be referred to a neurologist for further testing.
