Specialty Pharmacy Services

Specialty medications may pose increased patient risk, meaning more monitoring, counseling and special handling could be needed. Specialty Pharmacy Services helps patients achieve optimal results from their specialty medication.

When a health care provider sends a specialty prescription to Eskenazi Health Pharmacy, the patient is automatically enrolled into the program. Participation in these free services is completely voluntary, and patients can choose to unenroll at any time by speaking with a pharmacy team member. As part of this program, the team:

  • Evaluates the specialty medication and creates a personalized care plan for each patient
  • Meets with patients to review medications
  • Discusses if financial assistance is needed
  • Coordinates prescription delivery
  • Arranges routine follow up to help achieve the desired outcomes

The program currently works with medications prescribed in the clinical care areas of:

  • Dermatology
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Pulmonology
  • Rheumatology

Refill requests can be made by calling 317.880.4560 or 1.833.470.2635 (toll free).

  • What is a specialty medication?

Specialty medications treat rare, complex or long-term health problems. They can be taken by mouth, injected, inhaled or infused. They can be given at home or in a health care setting. These medications may have special directions or may need to be stored in a certain way.

  • Why do I need to engage with Specialty Pharmacy Services?

Specialty medications are usually expensive and hard to get from the local pharmacy. Patients taking a specialty medication may need extra training and education. They may also need help with insurance and financial assistance. The Specialty Pharmacy Services team goes above and beyond the typical pharmacy to make sure the medications work for each patient.

  • How much will my medication cost?

The price for specialty medications will vary. The team collaborates with patients to obtain financial and copay assistance and informs them of out-of-pocket cost once insurance approves the prescription. Eskenazi Health offers a robust financial counseling program should further assistance be needed.

  • Can Eskenazi Health Pharmacy obtain all specialty medications?

Eskenazi Health Pharmacy can obtain most specialty medications, but if not, the team will send the prescription to a pharmacy that can.
