This week, Eskenazi Health marks its one-year anniversary in the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and Eskenazi Health campus, with hundreds of thousands of patients having received care in the year following the historic move.
Since opening, there have been more than 21,000 inpatients in the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital; nearly 2,000 babies born in the Sablosky Family Labor & Delivery Center, including 27 sets of twins; nearly 100,000 patient visits to the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department; nearly 800 patients seen in the Kathi & Bob Postlethwait Mental Health Recovery Center; more than 1,000 trauma and burn patients cared for through the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center and Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center; and more than 800,000 outpatient visits, including patient visits to Eskenazi Health Center and Eskenazi Health Midtown Community Mental Health locations.

Marion County voters approved construction of the new hospital campus in the Nov. 3, 2009, election, with 85 percent support for the measure, and work began immediately. More than 10,000 individuals worked on the construction site and contributed to the development of the Eskenazi Health campus, with 90 percent of construction contracts going to Indiana firms, including nearly 400 companies from the Indianapolis/Marion County metropolitan area. Eskenazi Health's construction also outperformed local, state and national averages for work site safety. The new Eskenazi Health campus opened on Dec. 9, 2013.

To celebrate the one-year anniversary, Marianne Tobias, Ph.D., a resident musicologist, pre-concert lecturer and program annotator for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, will perform holiday music with special guest Steven Stolen on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. in the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation Concourse at Eskenazi Health. The event is free and open to the public. Through her gift to endow the Marianne Tobias Music Program at Eskenazi Health and her donation of the concert grand piano at the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, Tobias has brought the joyful and soothing strains of music to Eskenazi Health. The Eskenazi Health Campaign has raised more than $87 million in philanthropic support.

The 1.3 million square foot downtown Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital facility includes a 315 inpatient-bed hospital with 19 operating rooms and four interventional labs, 12 labor and delivery rooms, a 100-bed treatment room emergency department, including a 16-bed clinical decision unit, more than 200 ambulatory clinic exam rooms, one of only two adult Level I trauma centers in the state, and the only adult burn center serving Central and Southern Indiana. The hospital links functionally and operationally to the adjoining Eskenazi Health Outpatient Care Center, which houses primary and specialty care. The Fifth Third Bank Building at Eskenazi Health also connects with and supports the hospital and outpatient care center, housing faculty and support functions as well as related entities serving and supporting Eskenazi Health. The campus also includes a 2,700-car parking garage, the second largest parking garage in the state, which also serves as the canvas for the “May/September” public art installation.
The Eskenazi Health campus features a number of unique and sustainable elements, including an extensive art collection, a one-of-a-kind sky farm on the rooftop of the Outpatient Care Center, which produced more than 2,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables in its first year, and the The Commonground at Eskenazi Health – an open-air outdoor plaza designed in partnership with some of the world’s most prestigious design and architecture firms as a place accessible to and supportive of the health of the Indianapolis community. The Eskenazi Health campus continues to be on pace to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED) Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for the entire campus. This distinction would make the Eskenazi Health campus the first such health campus in the United States registered publicly in the national LEED® database.
