Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Health Re-Verified by the American Burn Association - Eskenazi Health

The American Burn Association (ABA) and the American College of Surgeons have re-verified the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Health as a recognized adult burn center. This achievement applauds the team’s dedication to providing the highest level of care for burn patients.

The Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center is one of 63 verified burn centers in the United States. This marks the first time the unit has been re-verified since moving to the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. The Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center treats more than 350 inpatients and 3,700 outpatients each year. The state-of-the-art facility contains 15 private inpatient rooms, 10 clinic rooms, two burn operation rooms, a medical spa, a physical therapy gym, and the most technologically advanced equipment to treat all burn injuries, including new laser therapy services for burn and other scars.

The verification process includes a rigorous review program designed to verify burn center resources that are required for the provision of optimal care to burn patients from the time of injury through rehabilitation. Elements of this voluntary program include an application; pre-review questionnaire; and an in-depth, on-site review by members of the ABA Verification Committee, as well as senior members of the ABA. A written report of the site visit team is reviewed by the ABA Verification Committee and by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. The final re-verification report for the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center cited no criterion deficiencies, a standard it has maintained for nearly 20 years

"The Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center and administrative leaders are exceptionally proud of our staff, who work together to provide exceptional care to our patients. The verification process endorses the high standard of quality of care that we provide each day," said Dr. Rajiv Sood, medical director of the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center and division chief of plastic surgery and professor of plastic surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

According to the ABA, burn center verification provides a true mark of distinction for a burn center. It is an indicator to government, third-party payers, patients and their families, and accreditation organizations that the center provides high-quality patient care and meets the demanding standards for organizational structure, personnel qualifications, facilities resources and medical care services.

The Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center is regarded as one of the finest and most progressive burn centers in the United States, and is located on the third floor of the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. The majority of communities throughout Indiana send their most severely burned patients to Eskenazi Health. In addition to providing quality burn care, the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center provides statewide burn prevention and education and a full range of plastic surgery services.
