One fateful day in 1996, a heavy gust of wind changed Richard James’ life forever. James was holding a large sheet of stainless steel on a construction site when the wind violently twisted him. The result was a severe back injury, an enormous amount of ongoing pain and the end of his career in construction.

Betsy Vance is the chief nursing information officer at Eskenazi Health. Working with Dr. Justin Morea, the chief medical information officer, she oversees the clinical informatics specialists who are a combination of nurses and one pharmacist that operate under a patient-centric, patient-safety focus. They serve as the bridge between the various clinical departments and the Eskenazi Health Information Services (IS) and Information Technology (IT) departments.

March 20, 2019 – Eskenazi Health, along with First Lady of Indianapolis Steph Hogsett, established a unique program two years ago called Creating Curious Minds – Family Reading with Steph Hogsett that encourages early childhood literacy and highlights the value in reading to newborn infants and young children.

One method used to treat severe bleeding at the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center at Eskenazi Health is the resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta, otherwise known as REBOA.

March 6, 2019 – Renowned classical music pianist Joshua A. Thompson, who was recently named Eskenazi Health’s second Performer-in-Residence, will appear in concert on Friday, March 15, at noon in the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation Concourse on the first floor of the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, 720 Eskenazi Ave.

Olayibo Oriade is a single mother of three who lives on the Westside of Indianapolis and has been working at Eskenazi Health for six years as an acuity adaptable nurse. Olayibo hails from Nigeria and 19 years ago she followed her sister and brother-in-law to Westfield, Ind. Prior to moving to the United States, Olayibo earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, though deep in her heart she really wanted to be a nurse.
