Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center invites mental health professionals to attend our virtual educational speaker series. This webinar is scheduled for Thursday, March 9 from 4 - 5 p.m.
The presentation will be led by Virgil Gregory Jr., Ph.D., MSW, MSCR, LCSW, LCAC, associate professor with the Indiana University School of Social Work, and Tamika Zapolski, Ph.D., associate professor of clinical psychology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and director of the Prevention Research In Substance Use and Minority Health (PRISM) Lab.
The presentation, “Structural Impacts on Black Recovery and Mental Health: A Black Male Exemplar,” will describe Black American substance use and mental health disparities and structural influences on health-related behaviors. A qualitative study examining the lived experience of cultural trauma in Black men will be used to illustrate concepts and identify potential clinician-relevant interventions and strategies to build rapport and facilitate recovery regarding cultural trauma. Participants will synthesize various structural contributions to Black behavioral health disparities and will understand fundamental clinical practices for building rapport that facilitates the processing of Black cultural trauma.
