Addiction Services -- Eskenazi Health

Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center Adult Addiction provides outpatient services for clients with drug and alcohol dependence as well as gambling addiction. Clients who participate in this program must be 18 years of age or older.   • Comprehensive Addiction Treatment

    Our fully integrated, dual-diagnosis treatment includes services for clients with addiction and mental health issues with treatment focusing on the fundamentals of recovery, development of recovery plans and relapse prevention. Individual, group and family therapy along with case management services are also provided. Psychiatric services are provided by our addiction psychiatrists and our multi-disciplinary team works together to offer clients a combination of therapies and medications to support recovery and promote overall wellness.

  • Outpatient Detoxification

    Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center also provides detoxification treatment for alcohol, benzodiazepines and opiates with linkage to treatment services. Clients are seen Monday through Friday on a daily basis for assessment of symptoms, vital signs and brief mental status exams. Detox services are individualized and generally last between two to four weeks.

  • Narcotics Treatment Program

    Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center Narcotics Treatment Program (NTP) provides medication assisted treatment to clients with opiate dependence.


    Comprehensive Addiction Treatment with Medication Assistance (Methadone) Our fully integrated, dual-diagnosis treatment includes services for clients with addiction and mental health issues with treatment focusing on the fundamentals of recovery, development of recovery plans and relapse prevention. We utilize medication-assisted treatment along with individual, group and family treatment. To be admitted to NTP clients must be dependent on an opiate drug for at least one year as assessed by the program physician and nursing team. Clients will receive assessment and treatment for other dependence issues and mental health needs. The program offers both medication and therapeutic interventions with the goal of abstinence from all illicit substances including alcohol, tobacco and other substances. Clients are engaged in treatment planning during the assessment process and review their goals and progress throughout treatment. Individual, group and family counseling are part of the treatment program.

  • Other Features of Addictions Programs

    • Gambling treatment is offered to clients dealing with problem gambling issues. These services include education, assessment, financial counseling, and individual, group and family treatment.
    • Treatment for tobacco use has been incorporated into all existing addictions treatment groups to increase awareness and provide support for clients with nicotine dependence.
    • Specialized addictions treatment is available for expectant and/or new mothers through the Perinatal Addictions Care & Treatment program.
    • After-hours or emergency services are seen through the Thota Rao, M.D., & Aruna Rau, M.D., Crisis Intervention Unit at Eskenazi Health and the Michael & Susan Smith Emergency Department at Eskenazi Health.

  • Circle of Recovery for Families

    Eskenazi Health offers services for pregnant people with opioid and other substance use disorders. The program has a family-centered approach and provides a primary care home for patients, in addition to substance use disorder treatment. Services are ongoing throughout pregnancy and beyond, building long-term relationships between families and the health care team.

    Services include prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care, primary and substance-related care, pediatric primary and developmental care, and counseling for pregnant and postpartum people and their support partners. Buprenorphine (Suboxone) and methadone are available for medication-assisted treatment.  

    Treatment for depression, anxiety, PTSD and other mental health conditions is provided by the team, with referral to psychiatric specialists available as needed. The foundation of the program is team-based care provided with respect and compassion.
